THIS IS US
Jennifer left corporate America in 2009, founded small hands big art, and has been honing her knack for turning a box of donated thing-a-ma-jigs into the next Pinterest craze ever since.
Known for cultivating a thriving fine arts + enrichment program for South Charlotte kids, Jennifer and her team pride themselves on curating original art projects that are rooted in fine art methodology and techniques, as well as modern trends. The studio has always offered adult workshops and private parties by request over the years but there has been a huge surge of interest for more adult and teen events, so Modern Craft Collective was created as an excuse to design a new logo and offer a fresh new outlet for creatives in the Charlotte area!
Jennifer is an avid animal lover and always comes back from vacation needing another vacation, thanks to her overly ambitious DIY home + cabin remodel projects.
Katie has been spreading color and cheer at small hands big art since 2012. Wherever she goes, she leaves a trail of laughter, paint spills and empty espresso cups.
She is a graduate of North Park University (Chicago, IL) with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art where her emphasis was in sculpture, mixed media, and nonprofit management and leadership. She enjoys cultivating an environment for artists of all ages to be inspired, challenged, & creatively fulfilled and considers her art-making medium to be curating and developing artistic events & opportunities for others.
When not teaching or hosting a pop-up workshop for Modern Craft Collective or at the small hands big art studio, Katie can be found exploring the Uptown Charlotte life with husband Nick & rescue pup Koda, or adding a dash of creativity to community events around town and the family biz.
Sonja is a freelance photographer and designer with a passion for the arts and character development in children. She graduated from Thomas Edison State College with an AS in Business Administration. She worked as an Art Director at a Boy’s and Girl’s Club and as an Assistant Teacher at a charter school in Charlotte before finding her way to the Small Hands Big Art and Modern Craft Collective team.
Currently, Sonja is working on a personal photography project, “100 Strangers.” The goal? To practice telling better stories by asking a stranger if she could take a photo of them and then doing it 99 more times.
When she’s not at the Small Hands Big Art studio or out and about in the Queen City for Modern Craft, a typical day finds Sonja as an elementary substitute teacher or buried up to her elbows on a freelance project. By night, however, she is a writer and avid enthusiast of cello music.
During her free time, she can be found either behind the wheel enjoying a new adventure with friends or in her family’s upstairs workshop being creative and learning something new. Sonja lives with her fun-loving and uber-entreprenurial family in Matthews, NC.
